Managing Director, Avanti West Coast

Welcome to our latest stakeholder update. This edition is packed with details on how we're performing, our uplift in services and our recent events.

The data in this update covers the period from 22 June 2025 - 11 October 2025.

Following my update in August, I’m pleased to share that we continue to maintain strong performance with low levels of operator cancellations. We’ve also increased the number of services we offer in September, which has helped passenger numbers reach 94% of pre-covid levels. Building on the progress made with our May timetable changes,we are now running more services than ever before on the West Coast Main Line. By growing the timetable in stages, we have been able to introduce these additional services in a measured and sustainable way, scaling operations while maintaining the reliability our customers expect. We are operating 309 weekday services – 310 on Fridays – meaning we are now delivering our long-term ambition to run ten trains per hour in many hours of the day.

Over the past year, we’ve halved the number cancellations that Avanti is directly responsible for (TOC on Self cancellations), and I’m pleased to say that these have remained consistently low since my last update, averaging at 1.53%. Period 04 saw cancellations at 1.18%, Period 05 at 1.02%, Period 06 at 1.68% and Period 07 at 2.01%.

We recognise there is more to do to improve punctuality. As almost two-thirds of delays are due to infrastructure issues, we continue to work closely with Network Rail and other industry partners through our Joint Improvement Plan, which includes a range of actions to reduce delays. As we approach the festive period, Network Rail will carry out major upgrade works across the network between 27 December and 14 January. We’re working to keep passengers on trains for as much of their journey as possible. You can find out more here.

When it comes to our stations and our people, we continue to go from strength to strength. I’m delighted to say that Penrith won small station of the year at the National Rail Awards, alongside the introduction of our new Evero fleet which has been named as joint winner for Fleet Achievement of the Year. In addition to winning these two awards, Shashi Vyas, a Cash Office Clerk at Euston who has clocked up 53 years on the railway was shortlisted in the Outstanding Personal Contribution category.

Not only that, but we’re continuing to improve accessibility across our network, ensuring all customers feel confident and supported when travelling with us. We’ve introduced British Sign Language (BSL) on our customer information screens and help points at stations, making real-time updates more accessible. In partnership with Alstom, Transport for Greater Manchester, and Metrolink, we supported a multi-modal journey for new wheelchair users to help disabled customers build confidence in using rail. Each of these initiatives reflects our ongoing commitment to making rail travel more inclusive, accessible, and welcoming for all.

Since my last update, our team has been active across the network delivering a range of events and opportunities for engagement – from our Annual Stakeholder Conference in Birmingham, our welcome stand at Liverpool Lime Street station and launch of report on how rail drives economic growth with the Campaign for Better Transport at the Labour Party Conference, to our Safeguarding Day of Action activity across the network which spotlighted the risks faced by vulnerable children and young people on the rail network. We’ve got plenty more planned, and I look forward to seeing many of you at our upcoming Parliamentary Drop-In taking place in December.

We’re also thrilled to announce that this year’s Annual Community Rail Conference will take place at the inspiring new Vault Youth Zone in Preston, a vibrant hub designed to unlock potential in young people through sport, arts, and enterprise. With the theme of Social Mobility, the conference offers our Community Rail Partnerships a valuable opportunity to explore how rail can be a catalyst for opportunity and inclusion.

But that’s not all, we will also be marking a major milestone later this year. Our latest Social Value Report highlights a huge £1 billion of delivered social value across our network since December 2019, reflecting our ongoing commitment to inclusive travel, community engagement, sustainability, and safety.

In the meantime, please let me know if there are any issues you’d like to discuss by getting in touch with our Regional Growth Manager team, whose details are included.

The details

1. Reliability

Over the last four periods of FY26 (22 June – 11 October 2025), 86.9% of our services arrived within 15 minutes of schedule, demonstrating strong performance despite ongoing infrastructure works across the network. Over the past year, we’ve seen a halving in the level of cancellations that Avanti is responsible for (TOC on Self cancellations) - these have remained consistently low since the start of the financial year in April and since the last update, these cancellations have averaged at 1.53% (22 June – 11 October 2025). Whilst this does represent a slight uptick, year-on-year figures have improved and remain at a halved rate.

The below graph shows the average punctuality between 22 June – 11 October 2025.

The below graph shows the level of delays between 15 September 2024 - 11 October 2025, outlining the percentage of services that arrived and departed within 15 minutes of its published schedule.

2. Delay minutes/cancellations

As this data shows, over the last four periods (22 June - 11 October), cancellations have remained low. While the graph reflects a slight uptick in delays - year-on-year figures remain significantly improved.

3. Delay responsibility

While there is still improvement needed, we’re seeing a positive impact of our joint efforts with Network Rail and industry partners to tackle the root causes of poor performance. We remain committed to working collaboratively to reduce delays beyond our direct control and deliver a more reliable service for customers.

 The big picture

We remain committed to attracting passengers back to rail and driving long-term growth. Passenger numbers have now reached 94% of pre-covid levels, signalling a strong resurgence in rail travel and increasing customer demand. Our continued investment in the customer experience is delivering strong results, with positive sentiment rising and our Net Advocacy Score (NAS) reaching levels not seen since before the pandemic.

While we experienced a temporary dip in NAS due to disruption caused by Storm Amy and major engineering works, our underlying customer satisfaction remains strong and compared with the same period last year (1 April – 12 October 2024 compared with 1 April – 11 October 2025), the score has risen by 10%.

These events highlighted the importance of resilience and proactive planning, and we’re using these insights to strengthen future performance. As more customers place their trust in us for a reliable journey, we are seeing continued growth in passenger numbers. We’ll keep building on this momentum by investing in further improvements which enhance the travel experience and support long-term recovery.

Safeguarding Day of Action: A United Effort to Protect Vulnerable Young People

We recently delivered our second annual Safeguarding Day of Action across key UK rail stations to raise awareness of the risks faced by vulnerable children and young people on the rail network. Read more below.

On 31 July 2025, we proudly delivered our second annual Safeguarding Day of Action, with activities led by our Safeguarding team across key UK rail stations. Timed to coincide with the school summer holidays, the event aimed to raise awareness of the risks faced by vulnerable children and young people on the rail network.

We hosted multi-agency stalls at Glasgow Central, Preston, Birmingham New Street, and London Euston, and visited the newly opened Safeguarding Hub at Wolverhampton Station. Through face-to-face engagement, educational materials, and interactive tools like 200 Seconds to Safety, we empowered passengers and staff to recognise signs of vulnerability and take action.

The initiative builds on Railway Children’s At Risk, Right Here, Right Now campaign and was shaped by youth advisory groups to ensure the messaging was relevant, impactful, and informed by lived experience.

Together, we’re strengthening the protective network across the railway, because safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility.

London Euston Cultural Event: Standing Firm in Power and Pride

We welcomed the return of the London Euston Cultural Event, focussed on "Standing Firm in Power and Pride", honouring the resilience, identity, and achievements of Black communities.

We were proud to welcome the return of the London Euston Cultural Event, which came back bigger, bolder, and more influential than ever. With the theme “Standing Firm in Power and Pride,” the event honoured the resilience, identity, and achievements of Black communities, while creating space for reflection, celebration, and collaboration.

This year’s event featured inspiring contributions from special guests including Kelle Bryan, Loose Women panellist, former Eternal singer, actress, and Lupus advocate and, Leon Berry, a renowned motivational speaker who shared powerful insights on mental health and lived experience within the Black community.

The day was filled with energy and purpose, featuring standout moments like keynote speeches from Andy Mellors, Managing Director of Avanti West Coast, and the leads of the Race and Ethnicity Committee. Attendees were deeply moved by Kelle Bryan’s powerful account of her journey with Lupus and Leon Berry’s heartfelt message on the importance of self-care and mental health.

Returning for a third year, Super Caribbean Catering kicked off the event with a soulful prayer and served up delicious food.

The event also featured a vibrant marketplace, lively karaoke sessions, and a thrilling raffle prize draw.

Being part of the Race and Ethnicity Network and helping bring it to life is amazing! It's all about coming together to celebrate our culture, enjoy great food, and have a dance!”

The event was a true celebration of culture, connection, and community, bringing together colleagues, partners, and guests to stand proudly in solidarity and support.

WCP Stakeholder Conference: Driving Rail Forward

Interested in hearing more about how we're serving customers, supporting communities, and driving economic growth? Read about our recent Stakeholder Conference here.

In September, we welcomed many of you to our fifth annual West Coast Partnership Stakeholder Conference in Birmingham. The event brought together over 150 political and industry leaders to explore how we can grow rail to better serve customers, support communities, and drive economic growth. We’re delighted that 100% of the attendee feedback rated the conference either ‘good’ or ‘excellent’ and we have captured comments to help improve next year’s conference.

The conference centred around three strategic themes:

  • Enhancing Rail for Customers and Communities – improving connectivity, accessibility, and passenger experience.

  • Driving Economic Growthleveraging rail investment to unlock regional development and social value.

  • Collaborating for the Future – addressing industry challenges through cross-sector partnerships.

Event highlights included inspiring keynote speeches from Andy Mellors, Managing Director of Avanti West Coast, and Shamit Gaiger OBE, Managing Director of West Coast Partnership Development. We heard powerful insights from panellists including Gareth Snell MP, Transport Focus, and Network Rail, and enjoyed lively engagement through our live Q&A platform and stakeholder marketplace.

We also celebrated Railway 200 with a creative finale, a performance written by Avanti West Coast’s own Geoff Baker, showcasing the rich history and future promise of rail.

Andy Mellors reflected on a year of progress, including the rollout of our new Evero trains and service levels now exceeding pre-pandemic volumes. He emphasised the importance of working together to deliver a reliable, customer-first railway.

Shamit Gaiger OBE addressed the HS2 reset and reinforced rail’s role in enabling growth, housing, and jobs, while keeping customers at the centre of everything we do.

We also tackled the ongoing uncertainty around Great British Railways (GBR) and highlighted the need for clearer reform and better integration of HS2 into the wider network.

The conversations and connections made at this year’s conference reaffirmed our shared commitment to building a rail network that delivers real value for the people and places we serve.

Making the Connection: Rail and the Sustainable Growth Opportunity

Our stakeholder team were out and about in Liverpool for this year’s Labour Party Conference - take a look at our activity there below.

Our stakeholder team was at Liverpool Lime Street station for this year’s Labour Party Conference, welcoming delegates and in partnership with First Bus, offering free shuttles down to the conference centre.

In partnership with the Campaign for Better Transport, we launched a new report – Making the connection: Rail and the sustainable growth opportunity – focused on real-world examples and future opportunities to unlock rail’s full potential. We know that rail is central to the UK’s economic growth and productivity. As one of the UK’s most powerful and proven tools for delivering sustainable economic growth and reducing regional inequality, we brought together a panel of experts including Campaign for Better Transport’s Chief Executive, Ben Plowden; Ken Skates MS, Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales; Avanti West Coast’s Managing Director, Andy Mellors and West Coast Partnership Development’s Managing Director, Shamit Gaiger OBE.

Rail allows people to access opportunities previously out of reach, revitalises communities long left behind, boosts productivity and opens up land for housing and development – all without compromising environmental goals.

But to unlock this potential, we need to encourage more people to use the railways. So we’re innovating our products. We recently expanded our award-winning Superfare ticket to Chester, providing more affordable journeys for customers and since launching in Spring 2023, we’ve sold over 240,000 of these tickets.

You can read the full report here.

Our New Timetable

Over the course of the next financial year, we will operate more services than at the start of the franchise. We are seeking to eventually operate 10 trains per hour during the currency of the December 2025 timetable, including the full rollout of two trains per hour on the Liverpool route – driving connectivity and growth across the UK.

We've introduced more services across our routes as part of a new September timetable.

Building on the progress of the last change in May this year, an additional 86 trains per week have been added within the new timetable, equating to over 38,000 additional seats – an increase of 3.8 percent.

From the launch date of 15 September, the enhancement of services means that for the first time we will be running more services than December 2019, with a new total of 2,045 trains operating across its network per week.

Those travelling between London and Liverpool will benefit from the greatest uplift in services, with an extra 36 trains per week scheduled to run between these destinations. These will provide customers with the variety of a half-hourly service in some of the busier travelling hours, an improvement on the previous timetable which offered one train per hour throughout the majority of the week.

Enhancements have also been made to the number of services between London and the Midlands, with customers travelling on this route having 26 more trains per week to choose from.

The increase on both these routes has been made possible following the introduction of Avanti West Coast’s new Evero fleet – a £350m investment of 13 bi-mode and 10 electric trains, the final of which came into service in June. Up to 20 trains from the new Evero fleet are scheduled to run per day from 15 September as part of the new timetable, offering customers a quieter, greener and more comfortable journey.

Other routes that have benefited from the changes include an increase in direct services to and from Manchester and Chester – with both destinations benefitting from a new weekly southbound service to London that departs later than the last train of the day in the previous timetable. The additional services between Chester and the capital will also offer greater connectivity options for customers travelling to and from North Wales.

Highlights of the new timetable include:

  • Liverpool – an additional 36 trains per week to and from London, with calling points for Tamworth and Lichfield Trent Valley on 35 of these services, improving connectivity between these regions and the capital by 40 percent.

  • Birmingham and the Midlands – an additional 26 trains per week, made up of 20 weekday services, four on Saturday and two on Sunday.

  • Manchester – two extra trains per day added to the weekday timetable, including a new last train of the day for customers travelling southbound. Travelling north, the additional service will provide more later travel options for customers departing from Nuneaton and Macclesfield.

  • Chester – customers can now benefit from an hourly service to and from Chester in both directions during the week with the addition of two extra services per day, also improving connectivity between London and North Wales. At the weekend, the two additional services on both Saturday and Sunday will further enhance connectivity for customers travelling to and from North Wales.

Onboard our Services

Avanti West Coast rolls out recyclable spirit bottle onboard train.

We have teamed up with a local distillery to serve gin in miniature aluminium bottles as part of its commitment to offer a sustainable menu to customers.

Working with Forest Distillery – a family-run distillery in the heart of the Peak District – we’ve rolled out fully recyclable aluminium bottles for its ‘Forest to First’ gin miniatures (5cl).

The innovative bottle will replace the existing glass miniatures – providing a lightweight, compact and sustainable alternative for the gin which is made exclusively for Avanti West Coast.

Made from 100 percent post-consumer recycled aluminium, the new bottles do not rely on raw material – offering a carbon footprint of up to 90 percent lower than 5cl bottles made from PET (polyethylene terephthalate) plastic or glass.

Switching to this packaging also supports a circular approach to waste – whereby the bottles are recycled keeping the materials in use for as long as possible.

Weighing just 10 grams, the aluminium bottle is almost 67 percent lighter than a 5cl glass bottle – reducing the weight of each delivery by 160 kilograms and cutting transport emissions.

Avanti West Coast celebrates double win at National Rail Awards

Avanti West Coast’s Penrith station and Evero fleet have been honoured at the National Rail Awards. Often dubbed as the ‘Railway Oscars, the National Rail Awards celebrates outstanding achievements within the rail industry. At a ceremony held in central London, Avanti West Coast won in the Small Station of the Year category for Penrith station and was named as joint winner in the Fleet Achievement of the Year category for the introduction of its Evero fleet.

Penrith station was recognised on the evening by the judging panel as being a “community-focused transport hub, with an appearance that is welcoming to customers whether they are arriving by train or from the town.”

Avanti West Coast colleagues at the station were further congratulated by the panel for “the inventive and informative displays within the station that help customers when travelling to and from Penrith.”

The operator also scooped a joint win in the Fleet Achievement of the Year category, following a successful launch of its Evero fleet – a £350m investment of 13 bi-mode (Class 805) and 10 electric trains (Class 807), the final of which came into service in June. The judging panel congratulated Avanti West Coast for “its well-planned implementation of the fleet, and the benefits that the Evero trains themselves offer to customers.”

Alongside the two wins, Shashi Vyas, a Cash Office Clerk at Euston who has clocked up 53 years on the railway was shortlisted in the Outstanding Personal Contribution category. Coventry Station was also shortlisted for Large Station of the Year, as well as the Social Media team in the Customer Service Excellence category. Team Euston – a collaboration of Avanti West Coast, Network Rail, London Northwestern Railway and Mitie were also nominated in the category of Outstanding Team Work.

Mark Green, Station Manager at Penrith, said: “I’m thrilled that Penrith station won Small Station of the Year. We are a small but perfectly formed team, including our community gardeners, and this industry recognition is testament to the commitment and passion of the team, which they show every single day. It’s a real honour and I know the team are delighted with it.”

Travelling with us this Christmas and New Year?

Tickets for the festive period are now on sale. All ticket types, including the cheapest advance fares, are now on sale for travel dates up to 2 January. To keep customers moving this Christmas, we’re also lifting our Peak restrictions. That means that all Avanti West Coast services from Friday 19 December to Sunday 4 January inclusive are Off-Peak, meaning passengers have flexibility to travel at any time on these dates with an Off-Peak ticket. For additional information on this, see our website here.

Between 27 December and 14 January, some essential engineering projects are taking place across the network to make future journeys more reliable for passengers. Customers making journeys during this time are strongly advised to plan ahead and check before travel.

We’re working closely with Network Rail and other operators to keep passengers on trains for as much of their journey as possible. Where there are no alternative rail routes, replacement buses will be in place to get passengers where they need to be.

You can find out further information about these works on our website here: https://www.avantiwestcoast.co.uk/christmas
